Down syndrome occurs in individuals who have an extra partial (or whole) copy of chromosome 21, but the reason for this remains unknown. Around 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with Down syndrome globally.

In December 2011, March 21 was declared as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) and is observed each year since 2012 to raise awareness of Down syndrome.

WDSD presents a unique opportunity to connect every year and enables the Down syndrome community to share their ideas, experiences and knowledge. It would help reach out to the main stakeholders to introduce a positive change.

If such a change is possible, the quality of life of people with Down syndrome can be improved. They can be motivated to actively participate in regular check-ups with health professionals to monitor their mental and physical condition and provide the best treatment and counseling, which in turn would encourage them to participate in different works of the mainstream society.

It is important to have a global conversation which will help empower people to advocate for full #Inclusion for people with Down syndrome and disabilities in the mainstream society. (UN)
